How to find us

Basel liegt an der Nordwest-Ecke der Schweiz, direkt an der Landesgrenze zu Deutschland und Frankreich (47.5° N, 7.5° E) [Fig. 1, 2]. Die Stadt hat knapp 200'000, die Agglomeration etwa eine halbe Million Einwohner. Die Universität Basel bildet 8'000 Studierende aus.

Das Botanische Institut besteht aus zwei Abteilungen, die beide am Rand der Altstadt liegen und 5 Minuten voneinander entfernt sind: Die Abt. Pflanzenökologie befindet sich an der Schönbeinstrasse zwischen Spalentor, Petersplatz und Universitätsbibliothek. Die Abt. Pflanzenphysiologie ist an der Hebelstr. 1 untergebracht [Fig. 3].

Reisende aus der Schweiz fahren mit der SBB bis «Basel SBB». Reisende aus Deutschland fahren mit der DB bis zum «Badischen Bahnhof». Reisende aus Frankreich kommen mit der SNCF im Areal des «Bahnhofs SBB» an.

Das Botanische Institut (Abt. Pflanzenökologie) liegt an der Schönbeinstrasse, 50 m von der Haltestelle «Spalentor» entfernt.
Am Bahnhof SBB nimmt man die Buslinie 30, welche direkt ans Spalentor fährt. Fahrzeit 5 Minuten. Man kann auch Tram 8 benutzen und an der Haltestelle «Bankverein» in die Tramlinie 3 umsteigen, so dass man durch die Altstadt gefahren wird (dauert etwas länger).
Vom Badischen Bahnhof aus führt die Buslinie 30 direkt ans Spalentor. Fahrzeit 11 Minuten.

Die Verkehrsbetriebe bieten einen Haltstellen-Fahrplan als PDF an (tagsüber 7 Minuten-Takt):
• Bus 30 ab Bahnhof SBB
• Bus 30 ab Badischer Bahnhof (DB)

Fahrkarten müssen im voraus an den Automaten gelöst werden.
• Bahnhof SBB - Spalentor: «Kurzstrecke» (max. 4 Haltestellen) CHF 1.90 bzw. für Inhaber des SBB-Halbtax-Abonnements «Kurzstrecke Kinder + Halbtax» CHF 1.40.
• Badischer Bahnhof - Spalentor: «Zone 1» (mehr als 4 Haltestellen) CHF 3.- bzw. für Inhaber des SBB-Halbtax-Abonnements «Zone 1 Kinder + Halbtax» CHF 2.-.

Aus der Schweiz: Autobahn A2. Nach dem Tunnel Schweizerhalle allmählich links einspuren: Ausfahrt «Basel West». Nach der Autobahn-Ausfahrt mit Hilfe der Wegweiser in Richtung «Kantonsspital» fahren. Damit fährt man direkt zum Spalentor, resp. daran vorbei und kann im öffentlichen Parking des Kantonsspitals parken. Kantonsspital und Parking sind ausgeschildert.
Aus Deutschland: Autobahnausfahrt N2/3 «Badischer Bahnhof». Den Schildern «Kantonsspital» folgen bis Parkhaus Kantonsspital.

Da das Institutsgebäude am Rand der Altstadt liegt, sind in unmittelbarer Umgebung nur sehr wenige Parkplätze vorhanden. Man kann versuchen, in den Wohnquartieren Platz zu finden, was jedoch oft nicht gelingt.
Das Parkhaus «Kantonsspital» liegt 6 Geh-Minuten entfernt, hat in der Regel genügend Platz, ist jedoch relativ teuer.
Wir empfehlen, das Auto peripher zu parkieren und dann die Öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel zu benutzen.

Erkundigen Sie sich nach dem Spalentor, das jedermann kennt. Das Botanische Institut ist das erste Gebäude unterhalb des Spalentors an der leicht abfallenden Schönbeinstrasse (Hauptverkehrsachse).

Basel is located in north-west Switzerland directly on the border to France and Germany (47.5° N, 7.5° E) [Fig. 1, 2]. It has a population just under 200'000 (half a million inhabitants if you include the agglomeration). There are 8'000 students enrolled at the University of Basel.

The Institute of Botany has two departments that are located 5 minutes apart from one another, both at the edge of the old town. The Plant Ecology Department is on Schönbeinstrasse between the Spalentor, Petersplatz and the main university library. The Plant Physiology Department is situated at Hebelstrasse 1 [Fig. 3].

Travellers from Switzerland travel with the Swiss Railway (SBB) to «Basel SBB» station. Travellers from Germany travel with the German Railway (DB) to «Badischen Bahnhof». Travellers from France travel with the French railway (SNCF) when they are not on strike to the French part of the «Basel SBB» station.

The Institute of Botany (Plant Ecology) is at Schönbeinstrasse 6, some 50 m from the «Spalentor» bus stop.
From the Basel SBB railway station, bus 30 goes directly to Spalentor (5 minutes). One can also take the tram 8 to «Bankverein» stop, and change to tram 3 that travels to Spalentor through the old town (a somewhat longer trip).
From the German railway station (Badischen Bahnhof), take bus 30 directly to Spalentor (11 minutes).

Tickets must be purchased from the green ticket vending machines prior to travel.
• Bahnhof SBB - Spalentor: «Kurzstrecke» (max. 4 stops) CHF 1.90 or for holders of the SBB-Halbtax card «Kurzstrecke Kinder + Halbtax» CHF 1.40.
• Badischer Bahnhof - Spalentor: «Zone 1» (more than 4 stops) CHF 3.- or for holders of the SBB-Halbtax card «Zone 1 Kinder + Halbtax» CHF 2.-.

From Switzerland: highway A2. After «Schweizerhalle», take the left lane and the «Basel West» exit. After exiting, follow the signs for «Kantonsspital» (hospital). These signs lead you directly to the Spalentor, past the institute and to the public parking lot of the Kantonsspital.
From Germany: highway exit N2/3 «Badischer Bahnhof». Follow the signs for «Kantonsspital» to the hospital parking lot.

Since the institute is located at the edge of the old town, there are few parking spots on the streets. One can try to park in the neighbouring residential areas, but this is often difficult.
The hospital parking lot «Kantonsspital» is 6 minutes walking distance, has generally enough place but is rather expensive.
We recommend that you park your car on the periphery of the city and use the public transit to come into the town centre.

Ask for directions to Spalentor (everyone more or less knows this landmark). The Institute of Botany is the first building below the Spalentor on the slightly inclined Schönbeinstrasse (principal street).
